Pater: Suspending belief, Disney style

Posted by Pater , Monday, January 1, 2018 10:39 AM

A few years back we tested out the nautical, less stressful world that is a Disney Cruise to great success.  When looking at how to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary as a family, it was therefore natural to take it to the next level and actually visit Disney World.  After all, a successful marriage is based on both partners suspending the belief that they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, and so where better to learn the skill of suspending belief than a Disney theme park?!!!  That's right, our vacation was a pedagogic tool and certainly not because Pater has always wanted to go and was probably more excited than the Avocado Juniors before, during and even after the vacation.

But something as massive as a trip to Disney World should not be approached lightly.  You can't just tell the kids over supper and hope they'll realise how amazing it will be and how lucky they are.  So, like with everything that is Disney, we did some research on how best to let them know.  And, like with everything that is Disney, the answer is not obvious but is pretty darn amazing.

So it turns out that your local Disney store has an actual opening ceremony every day.  That's right - whomever is first in line at the store gets to officially open it to fanfare and a large Disney key.  Why can't my office start each day like that?  So off Mater went bright and early to Yorkdale Mall on a Sunday morning (a weird feeling for her - visiting her Mecca while all the places of worship were closed) to be first in line, with Pater following closer to opening time with the Avocado Juniors and Grandma Toronto.  There'll be enough chances to stand in line at the parks, no need to do it at this early stage!
Getting the large key as a memento wasn't on the cards, but a smaller version was.  Nice touch!
But the fun didn't end there.  The Avocado Juniors just thought this was a great way to start a pretty ordinary Sunday morning in September.   Grandma Toronto kindly offered to buy each of them a toy, but other than that, they had no idea that their day was about to get a lot more exciting.  You see, we found out that the Disney Store will also make a large announcement about your upcoming trip and blazon your name across their big TV screen.  Not to mention give you loot bags with some Disney goodies in them.  So we sat our kids down and waited.
Admittedly, AJ1 was the most excited and AJ2 & AJ3 didn't really get what was going on.
Either that or they were just overwhelmed by the Star Wars robots that their Grandma had bought them.
But Mater and Pater carefully explained the delayed implications of the announcement, and when that didn't work, all subtleties were dropped.  WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY ON NEW YEAR'S DAY.  Finally the penny dropped and we could now sit back and wait four uneventful months until it was time to leave, right?  Wrong!  And Pater's not even talking about the hours spent researching hotels in the park (Pater booked the Animal Kingdom Lodge but forgot the marriage rule about suspending belief in his ability to choose; Mater helpfully reminded him of this when she cancelled the booking and chose the Bay Lake Towers at the Contemporary resort), how much time to spend in each park, what rides to do in each park, what Disney purchases to make ahead of the trip (as many as possible!) or even that morning, exactly 60 days before we were due to arrive, when we sat at our laptop at 6.45am, in order to lock in our preferred rides for the Fastpasses when the option to book opened at 7am.  No, that was all going on in the background, without the Avocado Juniors being aware, so what could we do to build their excitement?
The best advice we found, was to set up a reward chart, with every sticker earned being equal to half a dollar, which could then be spent in Disney World as they chose.  Obviously our only motive was to build anticipation and so that each Avocado Junior would have some spending money to buy whatever they wanted while on vacation.  Anyone who says we just wanted an easier way to get them to do their chores is, quite frankly, suspending belief in our purely honourable intentions.  And it certainly wasn't done so that they would each get a finite amount of spending money each (about $60 in the end) and therefore not nag Mater and Pater for the five days, to buy something in every gift store Disney sneakily puts at the end of each ride.
Four months passed in a flash and after spending an amazing, week with Grandma Toronto  in Aventura, and a 3 hour drive to Orlando, we arrived!!!!
Admittedly, said day was wet and freezing cold, which was all the more shocking since we had just spent every day of the previous week, swimming and enjoying the warm sun.
But a little bit of rain and cold was not going to stop an Englishman or his brood of Canadians. Oh no.  We threw on an extra layer or three, and a rain poncho over that, and then put our faith in to the sheer delight and warmth of Disney's Hollywood Studios.
We were not let down!  Between Junior Disney heroes like Doc McStuffins, Mickey Mouse's Clubhouse and Jake...
...and Toy Story...
...the Avocado Junior, especially AJ3, were most definitely thrilled and quickly forgot about the cold.  Throw in some Star Wars and AJ2 and Pater were in the stratosphere, oblivious to the rain...
But perhaps the highlight, despite sitting on cold metal benches with only our supper on our laps acting as source of warmth, was Disney's pyrotechnic and water spectacular, Fantasmic.  This collage of our favourite Disney heroes, princesses and villains was like nothing we'd ever seen.  Admittedly, when they lit the lake on fire it was probably the warmest we'd been all day and Pater will not deny praying that they would postpone Mickey's entrance to let this water-bonfire to continue for a few more moments, but nonetheless, what a show!!!
As we got back to our hotel, thrilled and exhausted by our first day in Disney heaven, we all took a moment to wish upon our brightest star that the rest of our trip would be as much fun and maybe slightly dryer and warmer...
Like every good wish, the weather did improve.  Slightly.  A bit.  Well the rain stopped. But in all honesty, it could have snowed for our next two days in the Magic Kingdom park and we wouldn't have noticed.  From the moment we woke up in our hotel (which Pater is prepared to admit Mater was correct in her choice), the child-like thrill of Disney was ever present whether it was the view out our window, our breakfast, the gifts the kids woke up to each morning, or the trip on the monorail into the park...
So much to see, do, hear, enjoy!  The street performances were Pater's favourite and while there was "some" pressure to "make better use of our time" on the many rides, I think in the end everyone enjoyed the magical feeling imbued by seeing our normally 2D heroes in the flesh (so to speak) and larger than life.  Though how Mickey and his friends were able to get from one end of the park to the other with such speed is still a source of mystery to the Avocado Juniors and their Pater alike...

We didn't just see our favourite characters at a distance.  Oh no.  With our autograph books in hand, we struck out to meet as many of them as possible, with AJ1 especially excited to show the princesses that she's just one of the gang, and AJ3...well we're not exactly sure what AJ3 was trying to show with his new dance...
Not that the days were spent only with Disney characters.  After all, you don't go to Disney to just have your photos taken with Mickey and watch him in shows (or at least, that's what Mater claims).  And the rides were pretty terrific, whether thrilling...
...or more Pater's speed...
What about the cold weather?  Did it hamper our options?  Nope.  Not in terms of what we saw, the rides we went on or the food we ate...
And always, no matter where we were or what we were doing, our eyes and hearts were drawn to Cinderella's Castle like a magnet to the North Pole.  Whether day or night, the castle is the Disney icon par excellence, a solid embodiment of what happens when you wish upon a star...
We didn't think things could could get any better than two days in the Magic Kingdom, but then we went to Animal Kingdom (once the Avocado Juniors got their gift of the day)...
First stop, The Tree of Life, which is as cool during the day as it is at night...
While smaller than the Magic Kingdom, we still got to see some great shows, including Finding Nemo, Lion King and a Bug's Life (everyone's favourite)...
...go on some scary rides (even Pater this time)...
...and a safari...
...eat ice cream (duh!) and our everlasting supply of popcorn (our staple diet over the 5 days)...
...show off our silly dance (and why not?  Hakuna Matata!)...
...and enter the whole new magical world of Pandora, which is beautiful and insanely creative...
And then, like the wave of a wand, it was our last day and the magic was over.  Well, almost...
We only had a short time available, but that didn't stop us condensing our by now standard Disney MO into a few short hours i.e. going on amazing rides (notably Frozen Ever After and Soarin')...
...eating popcorn...
...marveling at the sights...
...and meeting the locals...
Goodbye, Epcot.  Goodbye, Disney World.  Thank you for being everything we wished for, everything we expected and much more beyond expectations.  The magic will stay with us for the rest of our life.
